The ultimate aim of the book seems to be a deeper interpretation of the Illyrian defence of the Empire which Alfoldi made his own subject. The loyalty to Rome of these Illyrians is taken by Altheim to be a revival of northern masculine principles as opposed to feminine principles of the Mediterranean.
